    Scrubbing Metadata (Word 2000)

I just took a look at some of the past posts about scrubbing metadata from Word documents. The impression I get is that there's no built-in feature in Word to do this and that the only way to do it is with third-party programs. Am I right about this?

I'm working with an attorney today who needs either to remove the metadata from his documents before he emails them or send them in PDF. Problem with PDF is, he doesn't have a full version of Acrobat, which you need to convert Word documents to PDF.

    Any ideas?

The built-in option to remove personal information is not sufficient; you need a third-party tool.

There are free/cheap utilities to create PDF files, for example pdf995 - the free version shows a sponsor page in your browser each time it is run, for US$ 9.95 you can get rid of this. Other utilities can be found in the Software Finds and Wants forum by searching for create pdf.

I noticed that Microsoft has the following download available on their website. Does anyone know if it works? Is it sufficient for metadata?

"Office 2003/XP Add-in: Remove Hidden Data
With this add-in you can permanently remove hidden data and collaboration data, such as change tracking and comments, from Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint files."

See Woody's take on it in Woody's Office Watch vol 9 no 1 - it works, but is not the best, and it works only for Office XP and later, not for Office 97 or Office 2000.

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

Javacool has a nice little freebie called Doc Scrubber that analyzes and/or scrubs Word 97, 2000, and XP documents. (freeware for personal and educational use and he is currently considering offering Doc Scrubber 1.1 as freeware for business use)

Does this software require Java runtimes to be installed?
The "Java" bit would seem to suggest yes, but I can't see any indication on their site.

I don't know Alan; is there somewhere on my box I can check? From the help file:"For help troubleshooting any problems, or for any support requests, please post at the Official Javacool Software Forums on the Wilders Security Forums, hosted by the Wilders Security Organization."

If your attorney cannot afford, or does not realize the value in having, the full version of Acrobat, get another attorney.

Thanks. I don't think it needs anything "special" - seems to run fine on my vanilla machine. Just seems a funny name for a software company if their stuff is not specifically Java-based.
