Control toolbox corruption (Word 2000 SP3)

When I create a Form, then add some option buttons using the Control Toolbox, the form behaves perfectly until I close the form and reopen it.

I exit Design mode, Protect the form, Save the form then Close it. When I re-open it, the form is still Protected, but is still in Design Mode, and the exit Design Mode button on the Control Toolbox is disabled, as is the Protect document button on the forms toolbar.

I have repeated this a number of times with new forms and the same thing happens each time.

If I open the form on another computer, it seems to work OK.

I Repaired my installation of Office, but that did not solve the problem.

    Hi John,

Have you tried Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post>?

    Thanks Hans

I have got a copy and will work my way through it.

I was aware of the existence of that post, but I thought it was about something completely different. I thought Behavioural Problems referred to the tendency of people to behave in ways that you don't expect!

It would be nice to have a checklist to solve those problems too! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Re: Control toolbox corruption (Word 2000 SP3)

I think this problem is more deep seated than I expected. I tried all the suggestions in Phil's post, without success, then uninstalled and reinstalled all of Office 2000. Stilll no change. I was assuming that I had a corruption in my installation fo Word.

I now find that exactly the same thing occurs on another machine, also with Word 2000. However the problem does not occur on a third one running Word 97.

If I create a form in 97, it opens and works OK in 2000 (on either machine) but ceases to work if I go to design mode and change anything. If I create it in 2000, I can't then use it in 2000, but I can in 97. ( but opening in 97 gives the macro warning even though I have not put in any code.)

Yesterday I built a form in 2000 for someone who uses 2002. Now I can't use it or edit it unless I go to the machine with 97.
I wonder what will happen if I send it to them as it is.
    Regards
    John

Re: Control toolbox corruption (Word 2000 SP3)

I don't have the problem in Word 2002 either, but I found several posts in the MS Newsgroups stating that controls from the Control Toolbox are not compatible with documents protected for forms. Perhaps you could use a UserForm (created in the Visual Basic Editor), instead of controls in the document itself, but I can't judge whether that fits your requirements.

The macro warning is normal: the radio button from the Control Toolbox is an ActiveX control, and those are considered to be potentially unsafe, just like macros.

    Hi John:
I'm not much of a VBA expert, but does <!mskb=212559>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 212559<!/mskb> help at all?

Re: Control toolbox corruption (Word 2000 SP3)

    Thanks again.

My client wants to distribute a simple survey form to their members (perhaps 300 people), who will have different versions of Word. So I need something that works across a wide range of versions, preferably without a macro warning (members will baulk at this at not complete the survey.).

The simplest solution I can think off is to replace the Option Buttons with Check Boxes, and hope people only check one out of each group. Another option is to avoid
Word altogether, and the put a form on their website. Results could be either emailed back or written to a database using ASP.

A UserForm might work- but it looks like I would need to write quite a bit of code display the forms then collect the results.

    Thanks Phil

    I don't think that helps.

This article is specifically about adding controls to the normal template. I am just trying to add them to a single document.

Re: Control toolbox corruption (Word 2000 SP3)

If this is a one-time deal, consider using a survey site like http://www.zoomerang.com/. I used the free version many years ago, and although the authoring was a bit arduous using web forms (probably improved by now), the final look and feel was much better than I could have designed with any other tool. If you pay for the "Pro" level of service, I think you can get your results cross-tabbed or in an Excel file. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that suggestion. I didn't know about survey sites.

I will have a good look at it.
