removing/editing right click menu entries (xp/sp1)

    hi --

i recently installed a program that created several entries when you right click the start menu or right click an icon ... i would like to edit/remove some of these entries ... i was surprised to see that neither tweakui, nor treakxp pro, nor x-seq have an entry to tweak this ... any suggestions on a program that can? or, which registry hive do i have to hack? (i am comfortable in the registry, but would rather do it thru a gui)

    thanks

    HI,

Try this utility originally from PC Magazine, ( now a pay to download site ) which will edit the right click menu, called Context Editor.

It is still available to download at ContextEdit

    The filename is cnxtedit.zip about halfway down the page. <img src=/S/joy.gif border=0 alt=joy width=23 height=23>

thanks ... nice program -- ContextEdit -- but it only did half the job: it removed offending entries when i right click an icon, but left the ######s remain when i right click the start menu. entries from winamp and winrar are the offenders .... any suggestions on how to finish the job

If you are seeing the entries on the start menu, then the usual spot that you need to look in the registry is:

    HKEY_CLASSES_RootDirectory

Other options would be HKCRFolder or HKCRAllFileSystemObjects

Look under the "shell" sub-keys until you locate the items you don't want -- then Nuke'm.

Here's another place to look for the registry hack you want.

Re: removing/editing right click menu entries (xp/sp1)

Those are all very helpful -- especially the images -- but the 'asterix' entries will never appear on the Start Menu. They only appear on files.

Unless I missed it, the longer second reference never indicates the most likely candidate -- the "Directory" key. Additionally, I don't see the "Folder" key or the "AllFilesSystemObjects" key. Those are the ones that appear on the Start button Context Menu...

If the problem is entries on the Start button, then I would recommend looking at the keys I mentioned above.

You're correct, of course. I should have considered what your post said more carefully and looked a bit more closely at what I linked to.
