    Random style changes (Word 2000) (2000 SR-1)

Has anyone seen this before: I'm typing in Word, and all of a sudden, it switches styles! I haven't moved the mouse, much less gone to the pull-down box. This seems to be a completely random phenomena; it usually happens when I'm typing, but it's even happened when I was only formatting text - the style of the paragraph changed to a "Heading" style!

    Any ideas?

    Hi David,

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

What you describe is probably caused by various settings in the AutoFormat As You Type tab in Tools | AutoCorrect... (for example, Apply built-in heading styles). Experiment with unchecking options in this dialog.

    1. Go to Tools/AutoCorrect.../Autoformat as you type & make sure that you UNcheck most of the items, especially the last one.
    2. Make sure that Tools/Templates & Add-ins.../Automatically update document styles is UNchecked. This option changes your styles to match those of the attached template every time you save or open your document.
    3. If this is happening with a particular style, go to Format/Style.../scroll to the style & choose Modify... & then make sure that Automatically update is UNchecked. This option changes your style definitions every time you use direct formatting.
    Cheers,

Hans and Phil have given you something to think about but I am thinking of other factors which might be more likely from your description.

    1. Style changes when pressing Enter at the end of the paragraph - check the style definition for that style. You will be looking for the setting called "Style for following paragraph"

    2. Formatting applies a Heading style - If your selection is in any un-numbered paragraph and you indent or outdent the paragraph then the style becomes one of the heading styles (the level depends on the preceding heading level). I do this with Alt-Shift-Left/Right Arrow but you can do it other ways as well.

Thank you to everyone who responded, but...

Andrew: I can't seem to make the style change based on your second point; I've tried indenting/outdenting text with the "normal" style as well as text with "Heading 1" & "Heading 2" and all that's happened is the "style" box added the amount of the indent - there was no style change.

Try putting the cursor in a normal styled paragraph & then hold down the Alt+Shift keys & press the right or left arrow key. You should see the style change to either Heading 2 or Heading 1 (depending upon whether you pressed the right or left arrow key respectively).

Adding on to Phil's description for changing an unnumbered paragraph to a heading style...

The heading level the paragraph changes to depends on what the last preceding heading is. As an example if the last heading style above that normal paragraph is a Heading 6 then Alt-Shift-Right arrow makes a Heading 7 (the next level down) and Alt-Shift-Left Arrow makes a Heading 6 (the same level as previous).

    Thanks for adding this, Andrew. I should have explained it better. <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15>
