Putting headings in the outside margin (2000sr3)

I want to put some headings _next_ to the text to which they apply (generally one para of heading to one para of text). Moreover, I have several pages of this material, and I would prefer the headings to always be on the _outside_ of the text. That is, on the left for even numbered pages and the right for odd numbered pages. The text will be subject to a fair bit of editing, so I want something that will do the heading placement automatically. Is there any way of doing this in Word?

Not in any version of Word that I know of.

You will find that Adobe Framemaker is a much better solution for this style of page layout.

Word offers two tools for positioning text outside the main body, TextBoxes, which float over your document and can be positioned using the mouse, and tables with the left (or right) column sticking out into the margin. Neither sounds like a completely satisfactory solution if you want them to switch sides of the page on their own, but nothing else springs to mind.

If you have the pages set up properly (different even and odd facing pages with a wide outer margin), and if the heading styles are in frames in the outer margin, it shouldn't be too difficult.
I only don't see how you can achieve a proper spacing above the headings, so I used empty paragraphs in the attached sample.
