XP Pro can't join domain (2000 (SP4) & XP Pro)

I've setup a mini test network to see if I can use Active Directory and DNS. The Win2K server has AD and DNS setup, but I'm guessing I've got an issue with DNS. I've a problem with joining my WinXP Pro client to the Server's domain.

Server's IP 192.168.0.3 and is set to use 127.0.0.1 for DNS, i.e. itself
XP Pro's IP 192.168.0.10 and is set to use 192.168.0.3 for DNS
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0

both can ping each other, so cross over cable and network cards are OK.

Server's FQDN is dell.learning.nwtraders.com and the XP Pro client is just
called "desktop" and member of "workgroup". When I try to join the client
to learning.nwtraders.com I get the following error message...

Domain controller could not be contacted...
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location
    (SRV) resource

record used to locate a domain controller for domain
    learning.nwtraders.com:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
    (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for
    _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.learning.nwtraders.com

Common causes of this error include the following:

    - The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

    - One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its
    child zone:

    learning.nwtraders.com
    nwtraders.com
    com
    .. (the root zone)

At the server if I do a "simple query against this DNS server" within the
Monitoring tab of the DNS properties it returns a pass. A recursive test
also passes. However if I do a nslookup 127.0.0.1 it returns
    server: localhost
    address: 127.0.0.1

    Name: localhost
    address: 127.0.0.1

and if I do nslookup 192.168.0.3 it returns
    server: 127.0.0.1
    address 127.0.0.1

    ***localhost can't find 192.168.0.3: non-existent domain

if I try nslookup of it's own FQDN it also get the same result?

    Kind regards,

    Ian Price

Not very strong on XP, but is 0 (zero) valid in an IP address, I understand the lower limit is 1. HTH.

You can't use 0 as the host number or network number part of an address. I don't think that applies to any of the addresses here.
For example 192.168.0.3/255.255.255.0 has a network part of 192.168.0 and a host part of 3.

What I would try next is instead of the server using 127.0.0.1 as the DNS address, use 192.168.0.3.
Might not help, but won't hurt. :-)
