Windows Update in Tray (XP Pro)

Hi,

I start Windows and after a while an icon migth appear in the systray, and a balloon says it'd be recommendable that I upgrade Windows. I right-click on the icon to quit it, but an update wizard appears and I have to click again to cancel manually. Is there a way to turn this thing off?
There's an unnamed startup element in msconfig. Its path is: HKCUSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows:Run. I'm unsure as to unchecking it.

The icon hasn't appeared today, but if it does I'll upload a pic.

Thank you

You can turn off Automatic Updates in two places: in the Services applet, or in the System Properties panel accessed via a right click on My Computer or in the Control Panel.

I'd only recommend turning off automatic updates if you manually check with the Windows Update site regularly - at least once a week.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the suggestion. I know it's convenient that one updates regularly, but being on a dial-up doesn't help much. What's worse, the only patches I ever downloaded from MS were for Word 97 (at work) and after "patching" I found myself asking my coworker his Winword.exe file because Word would no longer launch. I put files back in their place and word worked again. From that day on I feel reluctant to install any MS patch.

Diego,
Despite your bad experiences with Word97, I ( as will most other loungers ) urge you to upgrade your system, particularly the SP1 service pack and critical updates. Yes, it will take some time on dial up but it is well worth it. Do it at a time when you are ready to go out for dinner or something and run it and walk away. Time well spent.

Hi Bob,

I had had several recommendations on installing SP1. I have just found WOW #7.03 in my... er, WOW folder and will have a look at SP1's pros and cons as soon as I can.

Thank you
