    Windows Update - no access (XP SP1)

    I have a home computer that I had the IT department at my former employer do an XP build on. I no longer work there and the computer is not connected to their network. When I run Windows update, I get the message "Access denied - Network policy settings prevent you from using Windows Update to download and install updates on your computer." How do I change these policy settings to allow Windows Update to run. I have full administrator rights.

    Sorry Bro But I think you gave to much Info to get your Question answered legally on this Forum.{{{{ I no longer work there }}}} I would suggest contacting the IT Tech that built the Computer for you.

    If it is your computer, you should be able to modify this legally.

    Is this XP Pro? It should be controlled in the Group Policy Editor.

    I think I'm Ok from a legal standpoint. It's my computer and I purchased XP Pro with it. They just rebuilt it for me when it crashed awhile back.

    I did find the group policy edit and set up the Automatic Updates policy. When I go to the windows update website I still get the error. Guess I'll wait and see if the Automatic Update does it's thing at the time I set up.

    Is it a regular WinXP or is it a Corporate Version? If it is the error I think your getting,,it's because of the Key Code.

    Try cutting and pasting this text into a .REG file and executing it. (First line of the file should be the one starting "Windows Registry Editor")

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPoliciesExplorer]
    "NoWindowsUpdate"=dword:00000000
    </font face=georgia>

    Thanks, guys! I'm all fixed up. Got rid of the offending registry entry (I had removed one entry earlier but missed this one.) and got the group policy set up to work automatically.
