    Locked files (Office 2000)

Using Publisher 2000 on peer to peer with just 2 systems. After working on a file on the system that has it stored locally (WinXP Home), I closed Publisher and tried to open a file on the remote workstation (Win98SE). I get, "filename is locked because it is being used by another program. Please close the other program and then try opening or importing the file again.

Hmmm. I know that when Word crashes, it leaves behind owner files (~$filename.doc). When you then try to open those files, you get a similar message. Perhaps that happens with Publisher, also. You could do a search for temp files (*.tmp) on your system & files that start with ~. Make sure that you first reboot & have nothing running except Explorer. I would only move the files that start with ~, unless you know they're safe to delete.
    Hope this helps,

Some programs take time to unload from memory. Outlook, in particular, is known to need some time to clean up, and even though all the Outlook windows appear to close, the program may be running for a few more minutes. If you check the Processes list in the task manager on the Windows XP computer, do you see anything that looks like Publisher still running after you close it?
