    Install updates (Office XP)

I can no longer install updates. I get an error message and an option to send a cryptic message to Microsoft but no help.
I think it may be something to do with clearing out the "G:WINNTDownloaded Program Files" folder.

Can you download the updates from the Office Update Site? Is the problem occurring when you try to download or after the download when the install starts? What is the error message?

I just tried installing Office XP Service Pack 3. I get the following:
Office Hotfix Installer encountered a problem. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    and inside the OHotfix(00001).log . . .

Making sure only this instance of the bootstrapper is running...
Making sure the environment is okay for patching...

    The update failed.
Finished processing the update on 03/13/2004 at 11:32:26.
    Encountered error 1635 while updating.

From your orignal post, it looks like you may have wiped out the Office Update Installation Engine. Go here to get the latest Installer package and see if this helps.

I went there and downloaded Instmsi.exe. Upon launch it responds "Error The specific service already exists" and exits when I press OK.

    Re: Install updates (Office XP)

That would indicate that you already have the latest version of the installer. There may be some corrupt files in the existing installation. Open Word, click on Help and select Detect and Repair. Once this has completed, try the SP3 update again. If this fails, have a look at this article . This details both a single client update and an administrative update. This article from the Office Resource Kit may also be helpful. If there is nothing here that is applicable to you, you may want to contact tech support by clicking on "Contact a Support Professional by e-mail" on the first page referenced above. I believe that if you have a licenced copy of Office, you can submit, free of charge, one or two incident reports to MS. Sorry I can't be of more help
