    NIC card problems (XP Pro)

Posting this here and in the hardware forum....need some help quickly:

    The history:
    Downloaded upgrade for Norton AV.
Installed it, but would not let me activate because of an AKey issue.
Tech support recommended that I clean my hard drive, and buy retail version.
Bought retail version, and went to link to download utilities to clean registry and hd of any NAV.
    Ran registry utility.
Caused my video card to go bonkers.
    Caused ODBC errors.
Caused my NIC card not to function (determined after 3 calls to Comcast tech support)-internet connection fine on other networked computers at home.
Went to another computer and downloaded drivers and fixed video and ODBC.
Installed updated drivers for D-link card........still nothing.
Uninstalled (both through the system and physically)-WINXP recognized and reinstalled....light is on...but NIC card is still not registering an IP address. IP address was released, but will not allow me to renew....says file is missing.
Showing all zeros for IP address and DHCP not valid.

Do I need another NIC card? Should I reload XP Pro? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Kathy,
Does Device Manager show the NIC properly without any yellow flags? ( there or anyplace else )
    --------------------------------------------
Uninstalled (both through the system and physically)-WINXP recognized and reinstalled
    -------------------------------------------
Does that mean you actully REMOVED the NIC card, rebooted, shut down and reinstalled the card, rebooted again?

I would also try running system scan first before an XP reload . ( sfc /scannow )

No error flags in Device Manager.
Yes, I actually removed the NIC card, turned CPU back on and booted up and XP recognized. I did not reboot again right then.
I have not done a system scan. What about a system restore?

System Restore is OK only if the restore point is back to BEFORE the problem began. My guess is that it won't be after all those changes.
    Do a system scan next.

Do you mean a Scan Disk?

    Kathy,
    No, a System scan.
Click on Start>Run, type in "sfc /scannow" ( without the quotes ) Then OK.
Program will run through all of your system files to make sure they are all there and current.
Have your XP CD ready in your CD reader, it WILL ask you for it.

Re: NIC card problems (XP Pro)

Ok, Bob, thanks. Try the system restore, and then the system scan. My help desk manager at work is telling me the best way is to clear my HD and start over with a clean load of XP. While I appreciate that, I do not want to have to reload all of my apps, the XP downloads/updates, etc. I have used Norton for many years, but this really kind of angers me that a simple removal could mess things up so badly.

Did I read that last post right? System Scan didn't do anything for you?
At any rate, before a CLEAN reinstall, I would try plain old reinstall, so that all your apps don't go down the drain

Re: NIC card problems (XP Pro)

I haven't done anything yet. Have to wait till I get home to my computer. But this is what I am going to try in this order:
System restore back before any changes
    System Scan
    Reinstall
    Clean reinstall

    Does that sound like a plan? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>
