Fouled up My Table of Contents (word 2000)

I have a document that I have been using for some time that includes a table of contents(TOC). I added an entry to it, and marked the text to include as I have done many times. Then I went to the TOC and wanted to update it, which I normally do using the F9 key. I think that instead I hit Alt>F9. Now my TOC has disappeared completely. I thought I could save it all by going to a backup copy that I had on a Zip drive, but it and the normal word backup copy act the same way.

It would seem because of that fact that all the backups are fouled up that I must have done something that has affected Word itself.

Can anybody get me back in business?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Halek,

    Just press Alt-F9 again.

What you've done is to tell word to display field codes instead of field results.

You can achive the same results via Tools|options|View and checking/unchecking the 'Field Codes' option.

    Cheers
