Conditional format blank cell (2002, 2003)

How can I apply conditional formatting to a blank cell? In other words, if the cell is empty I want it to show in a specific color. If it is not empty I want normal formatting. I tried entering a formula Cell Value Is Equal To ... and then if I left it blank no conditional formatting was applied, or if I entered something like two quotes ("") it looked for the value two quotes instead of emptiness and did not apply the formatting correctly. I finally tested for cell value equal to a blank cell, but surely there must be a better way. Any ideas?

    Set the condition as

    Formula Is =ISBLANK(cell)

You can use a condition based on a formula , e.g. ISBLANK(). See attched graphic.

However when you used ="", I suspect that Excel changed that to ="""". You could edit the condition to remove the additional parenthesis, and it should stick.
