Cannot delete random files (xp Pro SP1a)

I have a very strange problem. There are a large number of files I can't delete - I get a message saying the file is in use by another process or user, however there are no other users logged on, and I have been through every process on the machine using procexpnt, and no process has them open. The files are on a FAT 32 partition, and there is no obvious connection between them - some files in a directory are OK, others aren't., all kinds of file are affected, .zip, .exe, .txt and folders. Chksdk says there is nothing wrong with the disk, shutting down and restarting doesn't help, and they won't delete from a command prompt.
I have a vague feeling I have seen something recently about this kind of problem, but can't remember where - google search of MS Knowledge base is as usual no help. I can take a big stick to it and boot into DOS to delete or rename, but since I don't know which files are affected until I try to delete/rename etc, and there are certainly dozens if not hundreds of files affected, this is a huge ongoing headache. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15> Anybody got any bright ideas?

Re: Cannot delete random files (xp Pro SP1a)

Maybe, you need to log in as Administrator to delete the files, folders, etc.

Try rebooting, tap F8 during the self-testing to bring up the startup options screen. Choose to start Windows in SAFE MODE. At the log on screen, make sure you log in as Administrator. You should be able to use Windows Explorer to delete anything you want to from here...
