Deleting email messages

Using OL2000 Corporate, is it possible to delete messages in Inbox and Sent Messages from a certain date, i.e. say from 1st April back? I don't always want to delete them instantly and presently am going through using Shift/Del for each message. Thank you for your help.

How about clicking the Received (or Sent) heading to sort by date, then clicking the first one to delete and pressing Shift+End to select the rest of them. Then Delete, or Shift+Delete (does that bypass the Deleted items folder?).

Brilliant! Thank you so much. In my excitement I used straight delete so don't know whether shift del would bypass the Deleted items folder. Will try that next time.
Thanks again.

You could apply a filter with View|Current View|Define Views|Modify|Filter. But that still might not give you exactly what you want. It would seem easier just to sort the inbox or sent items into date order by clicking the "Received" or "Sent" heading. Then select the first message to be deleted, press Shift and hold it down, then select the last message and press the Delete key or click the Delete toolbar button.
Maybe that's what you meant by Shift/Del ... but just in case it wasn't.

you can use the archive feature to delete all the mail older than so many months.

i prefer to sort by date and select the mails to be deleted while holding control. i don't usually want all deleted or i'd use shift and scroll.

Re: Deleting email messages

I find a quick way is to use File | Archive. This allows you to specify which folder you want archived, the date previous to which you want items removed, and you can create a new file or attach these items to an existing archive file.
It is as well to understand exactly the difference between deleting an item using Del and <Shift +Del> - it may be very important one day! This describes the effect obtained with Outlook running in Corporate mode connecting to an Exchange server.
Del (or clicking on the X icon on the toolbar) deletes an item and places it in the Deleted Items folder. If the item being deleted is already in the Deleted Items folder, it is deleted from the mailbox - after a warning. Whether it is then retrievable again depends on whether Deletion Retention has been switched on for your mail server (a systems admin function). If this option is not switched on, the item is not retrievable. If the option is on, you can retrieve the item (within the system specified time out period) by going to Tools | Recover Deleted Items. This retrieves the item(s) to the Deleted Items folder.
If you use Shift+Del to delete an item, then the item is instantly gone for good, regardless of which folder the item was in. There is no way of retrieving an item deleted in this way. (On my system, Shift plus the X icon on the toolbar places the item in Deleted Items, so the instant removal seems to be restricted to using the Del key)
Quite an important difference, yes?

Thank you all so much for your help. Particularly in respect of the difference in Shift Del and Del
