WinXP Home Documents and Settings - MURDER/SUICIDE (SR1)

I am at my wit's end. Please help if you can ...

Since a bad experience being an "early adopter" of Win95 all those years ago, I never change/upgrade my o/s until I really have no choice. Hence my fairly recent forced upgrade to WinXP Home.

What is driving me crazy ... is Home's (and maybe even Pro)'s absolute bloodymindedness in sending my work to "Documents and Settings" My Music/My Docs/My Pics...

I am the ONLY user of this PC which is not even linked to any form of network, so why do I need WinXP ... to tell ME how to organise my hard drives .. (I have three physical ... and six virtual drives).

I want to put all my stuff on a SEPARATE drive ...under a generic folder 'DATA' - I back that up every day (just the data files) to a removable 60GB hard drive which I secure offsite... I don't want Windows XP to decide how to organise my data files ...

Puhleeze someone help ... before I do something drastic ... grrrrrrr ...

    I don't think you can get rid of this behavior entirely. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

But you can move My Documents to another drive: see for example <post#=291629>post 291629</post#> and replies.
And you can set the default folder in many Windows applications (in all MS Office applications, for example), or set the start folder in the shortcut to an application.

Right on target. I almost think I have a carbon copy of your situation. Three drives, six partitions. On my D: drive is a folder called Data, containing sub-folders for each application I use that creates user data files. As Hans said, I use each application's menu settings, including MS Office apps, Quicken, WordPerfect and a slew of others to point to a storage folder there. I have, in two years of XP Pro use, never had anything in My Documents except the few files that were put there at installation.

Hello guys ... thanks for that help ... it isnt what is ideal for me ... but I will work around the problem. I guess that "feature" has been included for those users who just dont know how to organise their work ...

I wish that MS would design at least two versions: one for the "button-pushers" and another version for those who understand how to use their computers!

Tut tut .. I am a tad tetchy tonight ... very many thanks for your quick and courteous help though!!

Remember that within Office you can direct the default location to any place you want. Most new programs MAY remember the last place you saved a file, my photo programs and family research programs do.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
