Publishing 2000 on XP (2000)

Hi,
I'm trying to use my computer as a temp web server before publishing. I also like to use this for classroom purposes because I'm an instructor and I want to show students a web once published. I'm having trouble publishing a web i created using FP 2000 on a system using XP operating system. I used to use PWS 4.0 when using Windows 98 and NT but since upgrading I'm having trouble.

My trouble is I can't do it. [img]/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif[/img] I guess I should say I don't know how to do it using XP. I looked and IIS (i think) is installed, but when I publish the site my hit counter is still not working so I'm not sure if I'm publishing to the wrong place (not really the server) but I don't know how in XP to find he correct answser to that. Someone told me you just can't do that in XP that Microsoft took that feature out.

Are you using XP Home or Pro? If you are using Home, no version of PWS is supported nor is IIS included with the operating system. XP Pro does include IIS 5.1 but I don't believe that it is installed by default.

In my previous post, I stated that I installed IIS, but still to no avail. Once it's installed how do I know what my "server" name is to publish to?

Actually you said "IIS (I think) is installed." Probably the first order of business is (if you haven't already done so) an update to IIS 6 (Windows Update). Then the IIS 6 Support Center should have the answer you are looking for.

If your server is your own computer, you should be able to use the built-in addresses:

http://127.0.0.1/ &... the default "loopback" address
http://localhost/ &...sp;*points to the above

To split hairs, the I think was on the IIS, couldn't rememeber if IIS was correct. But thanks for your responses I found my answer. Basically once IIS is installed my computer name is my server and when I publish from FP I use http://mycomputername/mywebname.
