Open with list (Word 2002 SP2)

When I open Word, I have a new blank document. If I use New from the file menu, I get a list of recent documents and some other choices. If I use the keyboard Ctrl-N, I get a new blank document.

What settings can I change so that I get the new document menu, when Word opens and when I use Ctrl-N?

    Thanks

Download the Task Pane Controller from Controlling the Task Pane, even when add-ins are present on the Word MVP site.

If you want Ctrl+N to bring up the New Document task pane, create a macro in a module in Normal.dot:

    Sub NewDocumentPane()
    SendKeys " % f n"
    End Sub

Note: the browser messes up the quoted string, it should be " % f n " without any spaces.

    Then, select Tools | Customize...
    Click Keyboard...
Make sure that Normal.dot is shown in "Save changes in".
Select Macros in the list of Categories.
Select NewDocumentPane (or whatever name you gave the macro) in the list of Commands.
Click in the "Press new shortcut key" box.
    Press Ctrl+N.
    Click Assign, then Close (twice.)

If you want Ctrl+N to display the Templates dialog:

    Then, select Tools | Customize...
    Click Keyboard...
Make sure that Normal.dot is shown in "Save changes in".
Select All Commands in the list of Categories.
Select FileNewDialog in the list of Commands.
Click in the "Press new shortcut key" box.
    Press Ctrl+N.
    Click Assign, then Close (twice.)

That's great. Thank you. I'll wait and see if I want to redefine Ctrl+N. It might be irritating to always have the pane come up.
