    viewed, but not printed

    Is there a way for me to tag an element of my page so that it appears in the browser, but won't print? I think I saw that option back in the notepad days of HTML...

    Thanks for any help !

    You can use the Comment tag - but people browsing won't see unless they look at the source code. Use Insert, Comment

    Let me be a little more specific... I realise that I wasn't clear enough in my last post. I want to be able to put a JPG on my page for people to see, but I do not want that JPG to be printed when users print my page. Is there something that can be done in Front page or do I have to use the tags of HTML?

    you can't control it - they can change their printer settings, but once a file is displayed it's also on their computer for their use, if they so desire.

    Hi,

    Actually, I've read that there is something which yoiu can do- but it's browser specific if it does exist (I think), and probably only recent browsers.

    I had a quick try today on IE5 and it didn't work. I'm at a different computer now, so I can't check now.

    Do you need a cross browser solution or a specific one?

    Thanks for your reply Geoff. I need the solution for our intranet and we are using IE5.5. But to be honest, we will probably need to have a solution for Netscape soon for our clients. So if there is a way... it would make my day!

    redtech,

    Sorry for the slow reply. I've just found this myself. It works (for me) in IE 5.01 and 5.5:

    <html><title>Media=print</title>

    <style media="print" type="text/css">
    P.screenOnly {visibility:hidden}
    </style>
    <style media="screen" type="text/css">
    P.printedOnly {visibility:hidden}
    </style>

    </head>
    <body>
    <p class="printedOnly">This bit will print out</p>
    <p class="screenOnly">This bit will show on the screen</p>
    </body></html>

    That came from http://www.richinstyle.com which has a lot of stuff about style sheets.

    Be interesting to see how that will perform in older browsers.
