This macro uses SendKeys to set the setting. If the "More" half of the pane already is open, it gives a "bonk" error sound (your error sound may differ) but does work anyway. Nasty bit of code, but I'm not sure there is a cleaner way.

Sub EditFind()
' Not found gives nasty error, so disable error msgs
On Error Resume Next
' Open "More" set to Down, move selection to Find What
SendKeys "%M%{ENTER}%n{ESC}"
Dialogs(wdDialogEditFind).Show
On Error GoTo 0
End Sub

Hi nsivin:
If you leave the Find/Replace box open, I don't find that it loses the setting. If you close the Find/Replace box & reopen it:
1. If nothing in the document is selected, the default is All.
2. If something is selected in the document, the default is Down.

The difference between those two is that the first will search from the cursor to the bottom of the document & then ask if you want to continue at the top. The latter will only search the selection & then ask if you want to search the rest of the document.

You can search for the last word or phrase used by using Ctrl+PgUp, provided you haven't done anything to change the BrowseNext command in between. You can also use Shift+F4 to search downward for the last string searched for.
Hope this helps,
