XP - storing items in registry

I havent had the opportunity to look at Windows or Office XP - I heard that with Windows XP the registry will be housed in a database.
    Is that true?
Can anyone shed some light on this - as we are looking at doing a project which moves items currently stored in ini files & houses them in the registry.
I wanted to know the implications if any when we upgrade windows/office XP.

    TIA regards Diana

they both use the same registry as recent versions although many of the entries are in hex rather than plain text format. it's a result of using unicode, not for increased security.

older versions (really old) used ini files, but they've long since been converted to using the registry.
