    Document doesn't open (Word 2002 SP2)

When I click on a document file without Word open, Word opens but does not open the document.

Also recently used files is greyed out in the Options menu. I've tried the TweakUI fix with no success as the settings mentioned aren't available in my version of TweakUI

See the replies to <post#=337377>post 337377</post#>. I think one gives the download for the TweakUI version for XP. With respect to a document not opening from Explorer when double clicked, go to Start/Settings/Folder Options & then follow the instructions below.

Thanks - I've fixed the problem in TwakUI.

I'm attaching my screen from editing the "open" action. I see that yours was the "new" action and I assume it's the open I need here.

Do you see any problem with my screen?

    Thanks again.

You're right about &Open, not &New. I don't have Word 2002 to compare, but try deleting the /dde in the box that says "Application used to perform action". Don't change anything else. If that doesn't fix it, you can always add it back.

Just for the record, fbaillie's screenshot looks exactly like what I see for Word 2002 under Windows XP (including the /dde)

OK - now at least I get an error. I appears Word doesn't know where the file is ! ???

    Screens here.

    Re: Document doesn't open (Word 2002 SP2)

    Thank you VERY much !

I downloaded SP3 and installed it and still had the problem.

I then ran detect and repair which did fix the problem, but fouled up Outlook 2003 which I had installed.

I then had to uninstall Outlook 2003 and reinstall it and now everything seems fine.

    thanks once again.

Well, first I would put the /dde back, as Hans indicated that it belongs there. You might try <!mskb=328100>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 328100<!/mskb>, which says that you need a service pack from Microsoft. I'm a little suspicious that you didn't get that error message before though. Does Word 2002 have a repair feature on the Help menu? If so, I'd try that...as it will re-register Word also. Please post back with the results.

I'm glad to hear it's fixed, but I wish we knew the true cause. Someone seems to have this problem every 6 months. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>
