Num lock setting

By default my num lock is turned on at startup and I hate it. On my old machine I could set it to off in the bios but this new machine doesn't seem to have a bios setting for the num lock. Any suggestions? (Windows ME)

Re: Num lock setting

Try:

HKEY_Current_UserControlPanelKeyboardInitialKeyboa rdIndicators

Type REG_SZ:

If set to 0, NumLock is disabled for that current user after logging on. If it is 2, NumLock is enabled and will retain the settings from the last shutdown

Nope. It only has keyboard delay and keyboard speed.

Re: Num lock setting

Is it supposed to show:
Type REG_SZ:
or am I supposed to type that into the search box?

Re: Num lock setting

Have you tried editing your config.sys file and adding a line:
NUMLOCK=OFF
then rebooting your machine? (I don't have ME so I can't guarantee it will work)
Hope it does the trick.

Re: Num lock setting

Edited to insert correct value :-(

I'm only 99% this will work - I have a recollection that ME ignores config.sys for the Numlock setting.

OK - grab a stiff margarita and try this:

With Keyboard selected
Edit | New
and select String Value
Name: InitialKeyboardIndicators
Value: 0

Re: Num lock setting

Well I did it with no ill-effects. No effects at all, actually! It's still coming up with the numlock ON...

Re: Num lock setting

OK - maybe I was wrong.

According to this, you do set it up in config.sys. Click on the link then page-down to the last tip.

Windows ME has got to be the WORST thing to search on in Google. It's all , me, me, me, me, me and not ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME

Anyway, the reg hack works for W2K if anyones interested

Re: Num lock setting

I have a vague recollection of modifying config.sys for this reason with Win3.1 - isn't progress wonderful?

Re: Num lock setting

Damn thing just replaced my carefully edited config.sys with a nice new empty copy!!!!

So... I'll just have to either turn it off manually or get used to using the 'other' delete key.

My brother has ME at home so I will investigate further when I get a chance. There must be a way round it!

Re: Num lock setting

Open Up the keyboard, and disconnect the 'NumLock' LED. That should take care of it...

...Nah. It's easier just to write OFF in felt pen beside it.
