Norton AV Scan Hangs

I had an issue come up yesterday with my weekly scheduled Norton AV system scan. It is scheduled to run overnight Friday to Saturday and when I turn on the monitor Saturday morning the scan has completed and I am presented with the results screen. Yesterday I was presented with an error message balloon near the System Tray indicating that my virtual memory was low and Windows was compensating for this. After about an hour of this, the scan was halted and an error message came up stating that the scan could not be completed and following the prompts took me to a Symantec site that gave me various options from ckdsk to scan each folder manually to find the problem file. I did all of this and no joy.

Ran a second system scan and noticed that when it got to the My Documents folder it began to display the files it was scanning in a strange fashion. there were about 10 "" after the My Documents folder and before the next folder My Paperport Documents and then about 10 more "" after that. This is where the scan hangs after draining the RAM down to almost 0 MB (I have 512 MB) several times (I am running FreeRAM to recover the RAM when it gets low) and then presents the error. I shut down Norton and went to Windows ExplorerMy Documents and found a folder in the My Documents folder that I didn't create and didn't know how it got there. I couldn't create the folder's title using my keyboard and am not altogether sure it can be done with the character map. The folder was empty and had been created the previous afternoon, although the creation time was not significant to anything I was doing on the system at that time. I removed it to a zip disk for "safe-keeping" and then scanned the C: partition and after completing that scan normally, scanned all other partitions manually and had no problems. I set Norton to run another scan overnight last night and awoke to a normal result in the normal time frame this morning.

I've attached a screenshot of the folder so as to display the title. Can anyone shed some light on this strange folder and what might have spawned it ??? I am awaiting a response from Symantec but wanted to get some real-world input from a trusted source....... The Lounge !!

Doc,

Strictly a SWAG, but I don't think it was a Norton problem but simply a corrupt folder that Norton didn't know what to do with, so hung itself out to dry by trying.
As long as you were able to move it and get rid of it, count yourself lucky.

Everything else seems to be running OK?

Bob,

That was my guess too. Rogue Folder !! Yes, everything else seems to be fine. The troubleshooting tasks Norton provided, lead me to what it was saying was a corupt or suspect file NAVComUI.DLL in C:ProgramsNorton but that just didn't feel right. Since I removed that errant folder, everything seems to be squeaky clean and hummin' along nicely. And I certainly do count myself lucky !!!

Doc

I don't observe that you ran CHKDSK /F, which might have "fixed" the amusingly-named folder?

SInce I was told off for suggesting that someone did a complete reinstall of XP, you can consider yourself lucky that I didn't see your post earlier...!

John,

Symantec's instructions didn't include CKDSK /F or I would have tried it. When I'm dealing with something I don't understand I tend to follow instructions from those who I believe do understand the problem (although with computers, I'm learning that my best guess is often better then help from some "experts" in tech support positions). If you had seen the post and suggested it, I'd likely have tried it. But, I would never tell you off for trying to help. I may you a little and embarass you some in the process (wish we had a smilie to show that process ), but tell you off......... Never !! I was raised to respect my elders !!
