    Hi Phil

Just tried it on 98SE and it seems to work fine. The finished "folder alias" (how I'd describe it

    Re: Folder Shortcuts

    Hi Alan:
Thanks for responding. I get the same thing you do, & also have Win98 SE. I didn't think that's what the tip was describing. What you have is the same thing you would get by right clicking a folder, dragging it to a location, & choosing "create shortcut". The tip says that it won't be a link file, that it will be a folder that acts like a shortcut.

    >>Drag the target folder and drop it on the Start Button (the actual start button, not Windows Explorer -- they react differently!!)

An entry will appear in the Start Button and the Explorer that points to that location. Notice that it's type is called "Folder" and it is NOT a .lnk file.<<

When I do this, it's type is a .lnk file (has a shortcut arrow).

    >>If you had dragged the same folder onto some arbitrary folder, then Windows would have moved the folder or created a .lnk file whose type would have been "shortcut" instead of "folder". Notice also if you create a real folder, then its type is "file folder" -- three different animals!!<<

    I can't create a "folder" at all. It's always a "file folder".

    >>Move or copy the folder shortcut to its final destination.
This is identical to right clicking & dragging & choosing "create shortcut".

    I don't even know what a "folder" is, vs. a "file folder". <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

    Phil,
    A "Folder" is an empty "File Folder", of course !! <img src=/S/rofl.gif border=0 alt=rofl width=15 height=15>

    Re: Folder Shortcuts

Don't think that's true, but admit I don't know the "technicals" and whether this just started in XP or not. Phil, maybe it isn't gonna work in Win98, cuz I followed the procedure in XP Pro and after dragging a folder from Explorer to the Start Button and then moving it to the Desktop, I get the properties shown in the left side of my screenshot. Dragging directly to the Desktop, I get a shortcut with the properties shown on the right. My "Software" folder is loaded with software install masters and has sub-folders under it as well. So, I don't know how or why the system treats "folder" and "file folder" differently.

Hmmm... yes, I see your point. I can't see the difference now either. Both the "usual" shortcut and the one derived by this method seem to behave in the same way.

Oh, I KNEW you were, Doc. I just wanted to show Phil what the properties would look like if he did it correctly, AND Win98 was handling it as intended. I no longer have a Win98 machine to test on. Keep the faith, brother!

Thanks, Al. Another reason I should have updated to XP. I just hate to reinstall everything. I have 170 applications installed. Yuck!

Hmmm. You gotta point there, Doc. And I complain that my wife won't throw anything out. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>
