    Alphabetize letters only (2002)

I'm working on a glossary with about 5000 entries, so I sure would love to alphabetize it automatically. Word seems a bit funny in how it alphabetizes, though. It prioritizes by spaces, then letters, then hyphens, then periods. (Those are the only elements that affect my glossary.)

For the entries in my glossary, the term is boldface and followed by a period, a space, and then the definition in lite face. I've been trying to figure out how to get Word to only look at the letters when it alphabetizes, ignoring spaces and hyphens. Also, the periods need to come before anything else so that the root word is the first word that appears.

Does this make sense? I've tried several different approaches. I feel like I'm close, but I can't quite solve the problem. Any help will be much appreciated, as always.

You may need to put this content into a table and add a column which contains the same content as the keyword except it doesn't have spaces/hyphens. If you sort on that and then delete the column before converting back to text you should have achieved the stated aim. Using copy and paste along with a search and replace of just one column should do all the heavy lifting for you.

I'm replying to my own six-month-old post because I just learned a slick way to handle the problem. First, I wanted periods to come before spaces, so I replaced periods with three spaces and a period. Then I did a search for any problem characters--hyphens, solidi, and commas in my case--and replaced them with themselves formatted as hidden. Then I hid the hidden text, sorted by paragraph, revealed hidden characters, and did another search and replace to unhide those characters. In hindsight, I could have replaced ampersands (which should be alphabetized as if spelled out "and") with something like andx.

Well, I thought it was neat. I got the tip from Jack Lyon from http://www.editorium.com. Thanks Jack!
