Using character map in OE (windows xp)

When using email with OE, I used to be able to insert a "tilde" over a letter by highlighting the letter and using ALT and the code number. i, e. "n" =ALT 0241. Now when I do that, it eliminates the letter. How do I resolve this? ( and yes, I hold down ALT while keying 0241)

Does it work in other applications, like MS Word or Notepad? If not, perhaps there is some funny mapping that your computer manufacturer has applied to your keyboard. If it works in those applications but not in e-mail, does it make any difference whether you compose in plain text or HTML?

Thanks....it does work in both notepad and word....now the weird part.....when I just tried it in email in composing, it also worked...however, I have a different font for compose than reply. I just realized that it won't work with that specific font, which I happened to download and install separately. I now see the problem! Interesting.......

FWIW I stopped looking into custom fonts some time ago because invariably they had little or no support for accented characters - which I need to use frequently. <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>
