Find missing periods (stops)? (2000 SP3)

Is it possible to Find sentences missing a closing period? I'd be happy to get a few false alarms (no period needed) as long as the search detects the missing ones.

Hi Dave:
I can think of two ways, neither perfect. The first is to run a grammer check. Hopefully, that would pick up most. The other, which would have false alarms, would be to search for any letter followed by one or more spaces, & then a capital letter. Of course, if the new sentence didn't start with a capital letter, you'd be out of luck. It would also stop at every proper noun.

Using wildcards:
Find: [a-z] @[A-Z]

or, if you wanted to add the period:
Find: ([a-z])( @[A-Z])
Replace: 1.2
Hope this helps,

Isn't this type of thing what humans are for?

To develop another type of eyeball text, you could add a couple of blank lines between every sentence and scroll through looking at the longest ones. Depending on how you set up your stops (i.e., two spaces or one), this could be simple or tricky. Word also has the notion of a "sentence," so you could write some code to insert two blank paragraphs before each "sentence." (I have no idea if Find and Replace can access Word's idea of a sentence.)

Phil & Jefferson, those are great ideas, which I will road test in coming days. You've given me some great homework. Is this what humans are for? Not if I can automate it. Naturally I don't tell my clients that. One odd thing I've noticed over the years: there seem to be more missing stops at the end of paragraphs than within them. Can anyone comment on that? Must have been some behavioural studies.

Hi Dave:
You can look for missing punctuation at the end of a paragraph. That's because you have a paragraph mark as an anchor.
Using wildcards:
Find: [!.,;:?!]^13

This should find any paragraph marks that are not preceded by one of those punctuation marks.
Cheers,
