    Copying Email & Favorites

I'm moving from a 6 year old computer to a new one. What's the easiest way to bring emails and favorite (bookmarks) over to the new computer without having to reinput each site/email separately? Thanks for any info.

    Hi Bob

e-mails - need more info, what e-mail client are you using
favorites - within IE select File>Import and Export...
Follow the instructions to export your favorites to a file (default name bookmark.htm). You can then copy this file to your new computer & use the same process to import them.

With email - it would depend what email application you are using. If you are using outlook you can copy the .pst file (this will be big - probably need a CD.

Do a search on your current computer for a folder named favourites, copy this folder, when you get your new computer, again do a search for the favourites folder and copy in your original favourites to this folder. The pathnames change a bit from version to version but you should be able to find them.

    Hi Bob

If you use Outlook Express then check these Microsoft articles from their knowledge base - 270670 & 276511
There are also many utilities which automate this process - This Google search shows some

For Outlook check the following Outlook 98, Outlook 2000, Outlook 2002

    Karen,

I'm not trying to be a wise guy or anything but does the Aussie version of Windows really spell favorites as favourites ?

If not ( and I don't know where the original poster is from ) the search will not come up with anything if it's searched as "favourites"

Point taken Bob . This spelling thing is really a nuisance. I have very limited HTML experience but find that I write code - it doesn't work and I spend hours trying to work out why, when the answer is usually something simple like colour instead of color. UHHH

LOL! I recall a seemingly endless telephone "help desk" session with a relative, from which the final solution ended up being "Remember to misspell "favourites" the way the Yanks do, then things will work OK."

    Re: Copying Email & Favorites

    Bob,

Moving all those personal things can be a task. Accounting for all of them, finding where they are, etc.

If you're using the same email client on the new system as on the old, there is another approach that could be useful.

One thing you did not ask about directly was your Address Book. Make sure you copy that to the new system as well. At least in Outlook Express (and Outlook, altho my experience with the latter is less), there are separate files (yes 2 of them) for the Address Book. And they're not in the same folder as the files for the mailbox(es).

What I do is go into the "system" and make some minor change that I can back out later if necessary. For example, add an addr to the address book, compose a mail msg but don't send it. Later I can delete them.

Then I go into the Windows Find/Search and search for files changed in the last day (provide no name). Sort the found files by date/time and your address book and mailbox(es) should be near the top. Now you now where they are and you can copy them to some transportable media.

Note that if you have several logins under the same Internet account, there could be several mailbox(es) and address books. But once you find the first ones, the path name should pretty much tell you where the others are - a similar folder that probably shares a parent or grandparent with what you just found.

On the new computer, do the same thing. If you're working with a different version of Windows on the new computer than on the old, the path could be different. Once you've found that, you know where to put your info.

If you're working with a different email client, then at least some programs allow you to import and export, as others have mentioned.

    Now Alan,

    I thought the misspelling was the other way around? Why kick in the extra "u"? Do you pronounce the u sound at all? <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Hi Bob,
If you are going to a PC with XP on it check out the File and Settings Transfer Wizard. Here's a link to an article:Moving Files and Settings to a new PC
