    Network Connections (Windows XP Pro)

I have a problem trying to setup a Dial-up connection to my ISP

I generate the Dial-up configuration using the New Connection Wizard and have confirmed set-up window by set-up window with my ISP holding my hand and yet when I try to connect I get -

"Error 6 The handle is invalid"

I have checked my modem config and "Diagonsed" it and it seems fine

I can hear it trying to handshake with my ISP server and that's when it fails

Has anyone any idea as to what could be wrong ??

I presmue that "Error 6" is a Win XP Pro Error Message, am I correct or nt ?

    And,

Secondly, is there anywhere I can download the full list of MS's WIN XP Pro's Error Messages

    I Googled without success @#$%^

    Awaiting any help

    Cheers n Tears

    Bob

I tried your suggested site but couldn't find anything relating to my problem

My problem is not being able to even make a connection to my ISP and not a problem with opening either my browser or email server

    Thanks for you time

Re: Network Connections (Windows XP Pro)

I don't know the meaning of your error message or if this is relevant to your problem but............ I had an experience with our daughter's (gift) laptop that really frustrated me! I had set the laptop up with all the proper information from my own desktop WinXP Pro dial-up settings and then tried to connect. The laptop connected for a brief moment and then disconnected. After trying many different settings, an updated card driver, etc., my ISP finally said that some modems don't connect well to their present equipment. So..... we signed her up with another ISP and lo and behold, it worked! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Re: Network Connections (Windows XP Pro)

I'd be more inclined to suspect the modem and/or driver.

Can you check under hardware devices that it is installed OK?
(Control panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management > Device Manager...)

Is the driver up to date?

Have you set any initialisation strings?
(Control panel > Phone & Modem Options > Modems > Properties...)

    In IE:
Internet Options > Security > Internet > Custom...
Down at the bottom for user Authentication, what option is selected?

Re: Network Connections (Windows XP Pro)

    Good Morning Lief

    Thanks for your suggestions

I must admit I'd not tried re-installing the modem !!

However it had been working in this computer up until something went kapput !!

The computer is at my son's home and I'll be there tomorrow and try out your suggestions

    To answer your questions

As far as I know the modem driver is OK, it's the Generic 56K driver and the modem has been running using this driver fer at least a year or so !!

No, there ain't any intialisation strings

And I'll look at the IE Authentication situation

However I don't think that is relevant to this problem as neither IE or OE are invoked at this stage, we're jest trying to open the modem's connection to the ISP

I'll let you know on Sunday as to how we go !!

    Thanks

    Cheers n Beers

    No Leif

Checked everything you suggested without any change in the result @#$%^&

It still comes up with this "Error 6 The handle is invalid" when it finishes trying to handshake with my ISP

    Any more thoughts ?/

    Awaiting help

Re: Network Connections (Windows XP Pro)

You say the modem has been running for a year, so what is now different or might have changed....
Are you trying to connect to a different ISP?
    Internal or external modem?
Any new software installed since the problem started?
Any other software installed that may be wanting to access the modem, like a fax service?
Any new hardware installed on your telephone line?

Re: Network Connections (Windows XP Pro)

Could it possibly be your security settings? Click 'Start/Control Panel/Network Connections'. Select your dial-up connection and in the security section, is 'Allow unsecured password' checked or unchecked. If unchecked, try checking and see what happens.

This site has some good troubleshooting tips.

Re: Network Connections (Windows XP Pro)

    Leif

    No the ISP is unchanged
It's an external modem and I've checked it connecting to the same ISP using my Office computer
Yes, my son added the MS Train Simulator program
No, there's no other use for the modem
No, there's only the phone across the line

Leif, I suspect the Win XP Pro OS has become corrupted so please don't worry about this problem any more Mate

The only thing I need now is a lead to where I can find the Listing of all the Win XP Pro's Error messages

Can you help with this one ?

    Thanks fer you time

    Max,
You said in an earlier post that something went kaput. What updates or new software has been installed? If you take a look at this Google search
error 6 search you'll see that there are many things that could cause the error. Have you tried a system restore to a time when it all worked?

    Max,
You can find XP error codes here but the descriptions are pretty cryptic - I don't know if this will help very much.
