Not that I am aware of. I'm afraid you must treat them with as much circumspection as any other download.

    Just to confirm:

The lounge server does not run a virus checker.

    Re: attachments and viruses

Thank you, I thought I'd read this advice/info somewhere in the Lounge but I wasn't able to find it.

Our IT people are very jumpy at the moment as someone introduced a virus to our network by carelessly downloading and running an attachment from a webmail account when the server virus signatures were a mere 3 hours old.

I suppose the best question is: Why not? Social responsibility, and all that...

    Re: attachments and viruses

With a three hour window on the update, even if the Lounge had AV software on the server, the end result would almost certainly have been the same. Security has to start with user education, the first lesson being not to rely on technology and the second to exercise caution.

    Re: attachments and viruses

You're right, with only a 3 hour window it probably wouldn't have been picked up. Haven't people here told tales of woe with even shorter windows? As for user education, that seems to be an uphill battle. Apparently the same ID 10T user error occurred the next day at the same PC . This time it was trapped instantly.

John's comment about social responsibility is admirable but I fear if the Lounge had AV software and something did slip through then someone somewhere would be reaching for their lawyer. This way we've been warned and its 'buyer beware' or is my cynicism showing?

I think your assumption about "buyer beware" is a valid one, cynical or not. A false sense of security would be all to easy to create. Not to mention the resource hit the server would take in policing every transaction....and we just recently got the search feature back by resolving that very issue!

Didn't the Lounge used to have an online scanner which Loungers could use, or an I misremembering? Again.

Even knowing that link/graphic was there, it seems obscure. I wonder if it would be better located in the header, next to Lex?
