Since it isn't obvious, is that press release talk or a recommendation based on your own experience (or both)?

Re: SpywareBlaster 3.0

I haven't read any press releases, but have used the original Spyware Blaster for some time. I've gone on the recommendation of Spybot S&D, to use it as "better" protection than their own preventative measures offered. Having just downloaded this new release, I can't yet comment on how it compares with its predecessor.

Hi Alan:
Please keep us posted as to the comparison. Since you've already installed it, I guess you're the guinea pig. I always wait for awhile when a new version of anything is released.

If I may jump in, the new version offers a smoother and cosmetically more appealing interface and a bit more customisation. All in all, an improvement to an already great product.

Just tried it. Seems to work really well. I have a feeling that they'll be charging soon, especially with all the recent news about spyware. Can't blame them.

Yes, that almost seems inevitable. Even with this version, the "auto update" option requires a paid subscription.

Phil

I think you will find that it's not possible to run updates on an older version, so if you want to continue using it you'll need to do a version update anyway. I'd concur with the other comments made in this thread - better/ slicker interface, smoother & faster operation etc. I also hope it will remain free . It's a good and efficient approach to a growing problem.

Re: SpywareBlaster 3.0

Alan,

since you seem to be the resident expert on SpywareBlaster, I'm responding to you.

Of course, others should feel free to help out with the invasion of spyware (or is it adware and are they much different?).

Based on my recent "infection" of spyware msgs ("your pc seems to have spyware...would you like to download") and "adware", I decided to take what appears to be a high recommendation and download SpywareBlaster 3.0. When I installed it, it mentioned that it does not do anything for what you may already have on your pc, just guards against new junk.

And therein is the problem. For the past few weeks, I've been getting a few windows popping up with ads when I first open IE when connecting. I can close them but new ones open up. After a while, this stops.

One of the ads was from BargainBuddy. I noticed that SpywareBlaster protects against this, so I'm not sure of the diff between spyware and adware.

A few weeks ago, I went thru the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and removed anything that seemed to look like adware. BargainBuddy was one of them. I was able to remove this successfully and haven't seen any BargainBuddy windows popping up since.

However, today I did another scan of my Add/Remove Programs and what's in my C:Program Files folder. This is what I found:
- A folder for AdDestroyer with an exe of AdDestroyer.exe. When I try to Remove this, I get a message about "could not open Install.Log". So I can't get rid of it. Or is this one of the "good guys" by virtue of its name? Suggestions?

- A folder for EARN that is completely empty. Candidate for deletion?

- A folder for Lycos. I recall that as the search engine but don't recall ever downloading anything having to do with it. This has an exe named Loader.exe, a couple of subfolders, and a few dll's. Don't see Loader.exe in Add/Remove Programs at all. I think I may have done a Remove on this a few weeks ago altho Loader.exe and the folder is still there. Suggestions?

- A folder called "n-Case". I have no idea of what this is. It has a few text-based log files. Looking at these, I see a few URLs of the annoying ads - like nitrous.internetfuel.com. There's an executable named msbb.exe which I do not see in Add/Remove. Suggestions?

- A folder called VBouncer with 3 exe's and nothing else: AdDestroyerInner, VBouncerInner, and VirtualBouncer. The first 2 are not in Add/Remove, although they closely resemble items that are in Add/Remove (see 1st item above and following). VirtualBouncer is also in Add/Remove but attempts at removing result in "could not open Install.Log" and I can't get rid of it.

Finally, Add/Remove also shows a program that I'm unfamiliar with: "Win32 BI Application". A search for this does not find anything with exactly this name but I did see there is a BI.ini (which looks like completely unreadable chars) and a BI.dll in my C:Windows folder. I started the remove process on "Win32 BI Application" to see if it could be uninstalled. I got far enough to see that it could but stopped short of uninstalling. Any ideas on this?

So this is my tale of woe for today. Any help appreciated on specifics of items above, software to remove them, general guidelines, etc.

Fred

Fred, Have you also ran the other highly recommended Spybot S&D and Adaware? They will remove the existing spyware junk that it sure looks like your machine is LOADED with.

Re: SpywareBlaster 3.0

Hi Phil,

Good post.

I was going to post back to Viking and ask where to get the things he suggested. However, I did a google search and got to the CNET download site. From there, I was able to get most of what was in the post (didn't check if they had the startup monitor but I got WinPatrol which seems similar). This session, I haven't seen one popup yet and things seem to be working well. (We need a smilie for fingers-crossed.)

Thanks.
