Encrypting word document (Word2000)

At work we have Word 2000 and in the File->Save As->Tools dropdown list it shows a "Security Options" menu. The "Security Options" dialog It lets us save the document encrypted using one of several different encryption algorithms, such as "Microsoft Base Cryptograhic Provider v1.0". At home I'm also using Word 2000 but I don't have the "Security Options" option in the Tools dropdown list. I've searched around but can find any information about the missing "Security Options" list.

Is there a Microsoft download that adds these encryption options to Word?

Thanks in advance.

I think it is "Security Options" in Word 2002, but "General Options" in Word 2000.

I couldn't find any encryption options for Word 2000. On the save tab (Tools/Options), there is only the option to password protect the document. This sounds like an add-in, but I couldn't find "Microsoft Base Cryptograhic Provider" on the MSKB.???

As you know, I have Word 2002, not Word 2000. What happens if you:
Select File | Save As...
Click Tools in the upper right corner of the Save As dialog.
Select General Options...
Do you only get a password box, or is there an Advanced... button?
If not, the OP may have Word 2002 at work, and Word 2000 at home, or else it may be an add-in providing some of the functionality built in to Word 2002.

Hi Hans:
That's what I did. File/SaveAs.../Tools/General Options.... But it just brings up the regular Save tab that you get under Tools/Options/Save. I agree that either the OP has some additional add-in or it's Word 2002. I couldn't find the encryptor that the OP posted though on the MSKB.

I think it's possible that this is a service provided by Windows. I believe Windows 2000 Professional had it, so probably Windows XP Professional has it, but I'm not sure about Windows XP Home. What OS is on the machine that doesn't have it?

Re: Encrypting word document (Word2000)

Opps. My bad. You are right, we have Word 2002 SP2 at work (when did they slip that one by me) and I have Word 2000 at home. This would explain why I don't see a Security Options... menu option in File->Save As..->Tools menu. Work is Win2000 Pro with Word 2002 and home is WinXp Pro with Word 2000.

Now my question is, is it possible to get the encryption options in Word 2000 so I can open these work encrypted documents at home?

For what it's worth I've attached the Security Options dialog and the Encryption Type dialog you get after pressing Advanced in the Security Options dialog.
Thanks

I don't think so; you would have to use the "Office 97/200 Compatible" option in Word 2002, you should then be able to open the document in Word 2000. If you use one of the new options, Word 2000 won't be able to open the document.

Re: Encrypting word document (Word2000)

In Word 2003, one of the encryption options is "Office 97/2000" compatible, which would seem to imply that some sort of encryptopn os available in Office 97 and Office 2000.

I'm booted to my Office 2003 system now, so I cannot now check this out.

Yes, in Office 97 and 2000 you could apply a not especially strong form of encryption. It could be set under Tools>Options...>Save (or maybe Security), Password to open, or through a drop-down or button in the Save dialog itself.
