Hi John

Try Tweak UI, it has an option in the Desktop section to display the recycle bin.

Edited by <!profile=WyllyWylly>WyllyWylly<!/profile> to add link to source page in case other Loungers want to download the fix.

I think we have a winner!

This was simple and painless for a computer illiterate like me.

A 2 second download and 3 mouse clicks later I'm back in business

Thank you John and others for all your suggestons.

recycbin-2.reg - Restores the Desktop Recycle Bin Icon

This fix is effective if the Registry entries for the Recycle Bin have been damaged or removed.

To use: Download the recycbin-2.reg file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double-click the recycbin-2.reg file. You will be prompted to enter the information into the Registry. Answer Yes. REG files can be viewed in Notepad or any text editor, as to the specific Registry keys and values that are updated. After the REG file has been imported, right click on the Desktop and select Refresh.

Just a note that one should be completely and totally confident of the source and integrity of the file before executing a .REG because it writes directly to the registry and there is no "undo" for that (I'm not even sure a restore point is created).

Re: How To Reestablish Recycle Bin Icon? (XP SP-1)

I can answer that last piece: no restore point is automatically created with registry edits. It must be done manually before any action is taken. Rather silly, since installing drivers and other software triggers an automatic checkpoint, but hey! I was not part of the decision committee, either!

Re: How To Reestablish Recycle Bin Icon? (XP SP-1)

I thought it was no more difficult than creating an icon/shortcut on the desktop and giving it the (fairly unusual) name:

Recycle Bin.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

Once you've typed (cut/pasted) the name, you only get "Recycle Bin" displayed.

Here are the others I'm aware of (don't know where they came from)...

Bitmap Image.{D3E34B21-9D75-101A-8C3D-00AA001A1652}
Briefcase.{85BBD920-42A0-1069-A2E4-08002B30309D}
Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}
Dialup Networking.{a4d92740-67cd-11cf-96f2-00aa00a11dd9}
Inbox.{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
Internet Cache Folder.{7BD29E00-76C1-11CF-9DD0-00A0C9034933}
Internet Explorer.{FBF23B42-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}
Internet Mail.{89292102-4755-11cf-9DC2-00AA006C2B84}
Internet Neighbourhood.{DB2112AD-0000-0000-0002-000004281965}
Internet News.{89292103-4755-11cf-9DC2-00AA006C2B84}
Network Neighbourhood.{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}
Printers.{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}
Recycle Bin.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
Url History.{FF393560-C2A7-11CF-BFF4-444553540000}

We sometimes put Control Panel and Printers on specific user desktops having removed them from menus via a policy...

John

Later... I've just tried this on XP, and it doesn't work as described. We're using the technique on NT 4 Workstation, and it may be I have to take some more advice...!

Re: How To Reestablish Recycle Bin Icon? (XP SP-1)

Did they possibly come from this old post?

I think they fail to work in XP due to the redesigned Start Menu. I have not tested them to see if they will work with the "Classic" Start Menu enabled or not. I would guess probably so - but since you can expand most of those items in the new Start Menu design through the Properties dialog, they are less relevant in XP anyway...

I doubt they came from the old post because the contents are not identical!

In fact they are quite significantly different...

Just picking on you, John. At a glance, those strings of GUIDs make my eyes glaze over, so I did not compare them closely. Lists of that sort are all over the web.
