track changes disappear from tools option (word 97 SR2, XP OS)

    Word 97
    mail merge with excel workbook
when opening the word document an "old style" dialogue box appears with drop down for "Entire spreadsheet", you know the one with all the text in bold blockey font.
Seems to open the word document, then close it, then open it again with the Excel warning of the spreadsheet already in use (by the current user) andRead only/notify/cancel option. Ver ver ver confused. No macros involved in word OR Excel.

When I was checking through the ToolOptions tabs, on track changes there was nothing to be seen. No text, no boxes, no buttons, just a blank grey tab. Same on Compatibility tab.

Logged off the machine and then back on as another user, and the track changes and compatibility tabs were fine with all options available.
Logged off and back on as original user.....no track changes or compatibility options.

Short of deleting and recreating the original users profile I really dont have a solution. Whats happening and is it terminal (no pun intended)?

Probably a corrupt Data key in the registry. See Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post>, step 4.
