    The file you're working on, is it on a remote drive that you're accessing over a network? When network connections are flaky, you sometimes lose parts of the middle of your document. This appears to be related to the way Word buffers changes between saves. Once you save, of course, any corruption on the buffers gets committed to disk. If you think this is the problem, work on a local copy and then drag it back to the server.

    Haven't seen other kinds of mid-document corruption, except maybe involving complex tables.
