    word xp mailmerge (xp)

When going thru step 2 "obtaining the data source", in the mail merge wizard, I desire to select an excel list. I check "using an existing list". I can browse for the use of excel files and actual workbook name. A popup says "connection ok". Continuing I save the odb file that then says there are no records in the referenced file. And no records are displayed on the "mail Merge recipients" dialog box. Sometimes I get an error message that gives several possible reasons such as the file is "read only", the name has forbidden punctuation marks contained. This must be an operator problem. Can someone provide a suggestion for someone that, apparently cannot follow directions?

Make sure that "confirm conversion at Open" is ticked in the General tab of Tools | Options...
Next time you browse for the data source, you will be presented with several options to connect to Excel (see screenshot.)
The default option, OLE DB Database Files, has limitations.
Select either 'Microsoft Excel Worksheet via Converter' or 'MS Excel Worksheets via DDE' and see if that works better.
