    ANTI-VIRUS (AVG)

(Just a thought for the site owners - virus protection/firewalls are always topical and important...could they rate their own entry in the "other serious stuff" forum"?)

I've been using AVG and ZA free versions for quite a while, and boy has it saved me some grief. I've read very little that indicates any need to upgrade to the paid product (except from the owners themselves). Saying that, I have had some problems updating AVG recently which is very unusual.. The site has constantly timed out during auto-updates

and asked for a "manual connection", which I've tried from both the "AVG" control centre on my machine, and by logging on soley for the purpose of updating AVG, ie, no browser running in the background. Has anyone else encountered this?

Secondly, can anyone help my identify the latest "AVG update" from my AVG folder - ie, what extension would I be looking for? My old bus requires regular formatting (basically every three months) to keep it running, and the major download of updates once you reinstall AVG is a pain in the bum.

    Thanks yet again
    Willow

    Re: ANTI-VIRUS (AVG)

    Willow,
I also am using the AVG free version for quite a while and have been having problems getting any of their updates. The only thing I can think of is that they have 'reduced' their server capacity in favor of their paid version. Our free versions go directly to their 'free.xxx.xxxx..xxxxxx' server and it is being overtaxed. Depending on the time of day, I've connected on occasion, and since there is no support for their free version, we are on our own..
The latest definition file I have is dated 3/31/04 and is named "u612m9jc.bin".
    Keep trying, you'll eventually connect.

I've found that their server has been veeeery sluggish in the last few days. Right-click on the link and Save Target as... has been my only way of getting the updates this week.

The updates are all .bin files. Try looking at the file date or else they use some sort of alpha and numeric file name - look for the latest in alphabetical order.

Thanks gents...even bad news isn't quite so bad if you know you "aren't alone"... the 'misery love's company' principle maybe. It's a pity though, AVG has had a good name for a while now. Ah, the mighty dollar.

AVG Free.... Will agree, in the last week or so it has been VERY slow to update. Update will fail and ask for a 'Manual conection.' I leave it alone and eventually it updates. Right now I am showing a 3/29 date.

Connecting to AVG has at best been very sporadic the last couple of weeks. Partial screen shot of the last update I've been able to get.

    Hi Ken
    Ain't life funny. I gave up on Avast and went to AVG . . . . <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

I will say that I was using Win98 when Avast would lock up my system daily. Started right after changing monitors. Could not fix it so moved to AVG. Have not tried it since moving to XP.
It seemed to work fine (when it was working) with prompt udates.

    So......... <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

Just goes to show ya, you MAY get what you pay for. I'm on my second year with TrendMicro's PC-cillin and have NEVER had the first problem. It doesn't use resources, updates semi-automatically several times per week and I haven't had the first problem with it. Much better (for me) than all those years I used McAfee.

    Hi Michael

I've been using Avast on my WindowsME and my wife on her XP system for a little over a month now without any problems.
    The auto-updates (with the free version) are fast and not bothersome. We're sticking with AVAST........for now.... <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
