'Error Loading...' (XP Pro SP 1)

    Please help...
After rebooting I get an error message: "Error Loading C:WINDOWSimage.dll The specified module could not be found" Is this a problem and how can I fix it?

Did all this start all of a sudden, this including your Office problems on the other post?
First thing - delete all temporary Internet files and cookies (that's to make the next step faster). Scan and clean system with the most current, up-to-day, the most recent (get the hint?) virus signatures. If you don't use an AntiVirus, and you've connected to the Internet for more than a few minutes, then you probably are infected.

Once you are certain you have no viruses, Use Spybot and AdAware (in that order) and make sure there is no other malware hiding.

Insert the Windows disk in the CD
Click on Start, Run, enter: sfc /scannow

That will repair any major system files.

Then let us know how things are.

You've got a trojan. There is a piece of malware floating about that uses this file and installs itself at startup, along with a file named winlogon.exe (there is also a legitimate file that uses the same name so be careful). You should immediately run a scan with your favorite antivirus tool, making sure that the definitions are updated. Then consider using on of the popular spyware programs, AdAware, Spybot S&D, or HijackThis. You can find more information on these tools by searching in the Lounge.

You may notice that your Internet Explorer homepage gets changed by this trojan, this is part of what it does. Complete removal instructions are located at Symantec's website.

Re: 'Error Loading...' (XP Pro SP 1)

It started when my ISP suspended my internet service a week ago saying I had some kinda virus. I have a 10 step program to take care of the problem but didn't do it. I guess I'll try the 10 steps--I have no anti-virus software but I use AdAware and Spybot religiously. My next big question is, and I guess I'm stupid or naive, do I need anti-virus software? I guess my current problems answers that. I'll report back after using some removal tools etc. Thanks

    YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE!!!

Now you know why. Without it, you are playing Russian roulette with your data.

I have 2 computers networked through a hardwired router. Will I still be able to use file and print sharing and can I use the anti-virus software on both computers? I guess I'm looking to buy Symantec.. Headin' out right now. I'll give you a full report. Thanks guys

Yes, you will still be able to use file and print sharing. Antivirus products scan files, firewalls monitor access over the network. Symantec is probably your best bet, but any of the major AV brands protect fairly well. Symantec tends to lead the pack in features and ease of use.

As far as using the software on both computers, the licensing may prohibit that, but I am not certain. Check the fine print to be sure.

You will need a copy for each machine to be legal.

Re: 'Error Loading...' (XP Pro SP 1)

I bought a copy of Norton AntiVirus Pro 2004 and it includes license for 2 computers so I'm gonna install it tonite I hope. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again, guys.. OK Out of frustration with NAV 2004 PRO, I defragged my entire drive and reinstalled everything, including NAV 2004. Everything is working well now and my next question is: The Start Menu. When I go to msconfig and view startup, there's a ton of stuff there--not now, but there will be shortly after the kids start adding stuff. How can one delete items from the start menu or do you just disable them? I seem to recall that you could delete in previous windows versions. Bottom line--I don't want alot of stuff loading on start, or do I? Thanks again

If you are talking the "Recent Programs" area , under the "Start Properties" you can limit the number of them that Will be listed.

You do have a account for the Kids, and their account(s) will not affect you account?

You can disable start ups from msconfig, but a better way is to use a utility like System Mechanic. It's got a ton of other features in it also.

    Get a <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> trial at SYSTEM MECHANIC It's a good one.
