Windows xp folders wont open (1)

    Hi All,
I got a client with a slight problem, when ever you try to open any folders on the desktop the desktop goes blank for a short while, then returns, but the folders will not open. I tryed making a new folder( right click etc), that worked fine, but even that wont open.
If you go to start/run and try to open..still nothing, the same for My Computer, My documents, my pictures....in fact any folder. But any.exe that is on the desktop will run.( games, Power DVD for example) I have located it down to windows drivers ( I think), if you start in safe mode, every thing works and opens fine, but not in normal running mode. I installed adaware in safe mode, restarted, found no spyware.Ran Nortons( its upto date) no virus's .The CD Drive is not available in normal mode since I can not get to it any way, and auto play trys to open CD's but then the desktop goes blank, and the icons return but no CD open. The only thing I can think of is running system repair from the windows xp disk to see if replacing the windows drivers actually works for this problem. If any one has any other solutions it would be very welcome.

    Cheers,
    Kiwi

If you want to do some in depth trouble shooting, refer to this article . If you do decide that a full repair is required, this article will give you all the correct steps. Note - following a repair installation, you will have to reinstall ALL of the updates from the Windows Update site.

My first question would be,,#1.When did this start? #2.Did you add or remove anything new or existing, right before this started? #3.Have you tried using System Restore?
Before you try a repair install,,and after you try a System Restore,,, Try running "System File Checker".

Thanks for the suggestions, Rebel and Cowboydawg.........According to my customer the problem started 3 days ago. I asked the questions about was there any thing new added in or changed, and the reply was as far as she knew, there was nothing touched, and the kids have said they didnt do any thing, or add/remove any thing either. Just surf the internet and read emails <img src=/S/hushmouth.gif border=0 alt=hushmouth width=16 height=16> ( I've heard that one before). I ran system restore back 5 days when it was meant to be going OK , but that didn't make any difference. I also tried to run SFC but it wont run.

Will SFC run in safe mode and still work OK? (thats the only way I can get into the "run Command")and any suggestions as to what switches to try?

As I said before I'm certain its to do with the windows drivers, because as we know in safe mode they dont load all drivers. One thing I didn't do, but will try is going into msconfig in safe mode and disabiling as per the artice that rebel suggested.I'll be going back in 2 days as this is when she will be home again, so any more things to try I'll try then. I'll keep this posted.

    Cheers

SFC will run in Safe Mode. Click on Start - Run and enter sfc /scannow to execute an immediate scan. Make sure that you have the Windows XP CD-ROM handy, it will almost certainly ask for it.

Safe Mode does more than skip driver loads - it loads only the bare minimum to get the operating system to run. This includes drivers, services, and programs.
