    MediaPlayer Sound not synchronized (WinXP)

    I'm running the 'normal' (but latest version of) MS Mediaplayer (in WinXP Home). Since some time I noticed that basically for all movies that I play (e.g. MPEGs and AVI's) the sound is not synchronized with the images anymore. Actually, the sound seems ahead (I think) and the difference is significant (several seconds)... Anyone with an idea why that is and better: how I can fix this?

    Thanks!

    Your system resources are low. Most likely your CPU speed is slower than recommended for movies (1.6 GHz) and CPU usage is near 100% when you are watching the movie. Try to stop all unnecessary processes running, close all applications and open windows and run a movie file once again. (To see CPU usage and applications and processes running in background, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click Task List button).

    I'm afraid it's not that simple:
    * My CPU is (more than) sufficient (P4 - 1.8)
    * CPU-usage: 16% during movie playing
    * Not all movies behave like this (I tested with an mpg, wmv: OK / An MPEG was NOK) >> Not saying it's the extension by default (could be maybe?)
    * The movie itself is OK as it does play fine on another system

    OK, latest, I suppose that's MS Media Player 9 (or 9 series whatever they like to call it). I don't know so much about MS Media Player, but there is a new feature in "9"; "Variable Speed Playback". It's for controlling the speed of audio and video playback.. This new setting only works with some file formats, thus that could explain your result. Take a look at settings.

    Is the behaviour consistent across movie titles, or does it randomly occur depending on what title you are viewing? Are these movies coming from the hard drive or an optical drive?

    The extension should have no bearing on the playback of the actual movie. All it serves is to tell Windows what application to use for playback.

    Re: MediaPlayer Sound not synchronized (WinXP)

    It seems to occur based on a title. The movies come from my HD (but also tested from other locations). I tried on other system and there it doesn't happen.

    Yesterday I re-installed Mediaplayer 9 completely (incl. updates) but nothing changed. Need a link to the movie?

    What video card do you have? It may not be relevant but my ATI Wonder card did exactly that. If this is what you have, I'll look at home for the exact rix.

    Do you have the latest drivers for the video card? See <!post=this post,354161>this post<!/post> .
    (Edited to add: )
    Do you have another player installed? If so, do these files play properly on the other player?
    A good source of information for Media Player can be found at the Media Player Troubleshooting site .
