    No CD Access (WXP Home)

I'm trying to help an elderly acquaintance with a computer that his son "built" for him, and I've encountered a strange problem. XP boots up OK, and when I check Properties for the Sony CD drive it indicates that "this device is working properly." However, when I put a CD in the drive nothing happens, i.e. it doesn't auto-detect and run the software. Furthermore, when I go to My Computer and click on the CD drive it doesn't seem to access the drive and it indicates that the drive is empty! I can't understand why the device manager thinks the drive is working properly when it won't read a disk.

Any suggestions as to where to start with this one?

Does this happen with all media that you put into the drive, or have you only tested with one CD?

Do you get different results for data and audio CDs?

When you access the drive in Windows Explorer, does it make a "sick" whining noise like it is trying to spin up and get its bearings but just can't manage it? Or does nothing happen at all?

Nothing happens when trying to access any software CD (tried XP and a modem driver CD). I haven't tried an audio CD, but I'll try that the next time.

    To manage AutoPlay utility:

    1. Double-click My Computer icon on your desktop or press Windows and E keys on your keyboard simultaneously.
    2. Windows Explorer window appears. Right-click the icon representing your CD drive and from pop-up menu choose Properties.
    3. Drive Properties dialog appears. Click AutoPlay tab.
    4. From "Select a content type..." drop-down list, select the type you want to manage.
    5. From Actions area, choose an action to perform or "Prompt me each time" option by clicking the radio button.
    6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each type you want to manage.
    7. When you finish, click Apply and OK buttons.
    8. If you have more than one CD drive, repeat steps 2 - 7 for other drives.

It was created using the primitive tools in Photoshop Elements. (Primitive in the sense that you can't put individual timings on the frames.)

That's funny. Can you do the one from Matrix Revolutions where light comes out from behind the sunglasses and the guy explodes? (Just saw it on DVD last night...)
