Properties tab will not stay open

    This is my first "post".
If I do something wrong, please let me know.

I am trying to recover from a (5) virus on my PC running windows 98se.
    I used AVG.
When I right click on my computer and select properties the properties flash to the screen and then close.
I started the PC in safe mode and now have only low resolution.
and I must use ctl+alt+del to shut down.

Thank you for any help/advise you can offer.
    Diana

    Hi Diana,

    Welcome to the lounge !! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Can you tell us a bit more about your situation? What virus(s) were you infected with and what action did AVG take ?? It sounds like you might have some remnants of the virus causing problems here. Post back and we'll see what we can do. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

    Hi Diana:
If you go to the Control Panel & click on System, does the same thing happen? You might look on your Win98 CD & copy the
    sysdm.cpl
to your Windows/System folder. You could try doing this by going to Start/Run & typing
    sfc
then <enter> & run the System File Checker.
    Hope this helps,

    Hi DocWatson,

I am ashamed to say I did not copy the names.
I thought "everything was well". AVG cleaned the first four and erased the last one.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Phil,

Thanks, I got it... but no change.

Is there anything I can do to make my screen res. better while I'm tracking this?

    Thanks again,
    Diana

If you're in Safe Mode, I am afraid you're stuck with the ugly oversized display. Safe Mode disables all advanced hardware devices, prime among them your video adapter.

Rather than spend an excessive amount of time tracking down potential problems, have you considered re-running Windows 98 setup? It will automatically check and repair any missing/damaged system files without touching your data or settings.

    Hi Mark,

I'm not in safe mode now... but still can't keep properties tab open long enough to change settings.

I re-ran win 98 set up... no luck.

    Thanks for your help,
    Diana

Well, that stinks. Certainly not what I wanted to hear, nor yourself I am sure. My suggestion for a next step would be to perform clean-boot troubleshooting. This is well documented in the following article: 192926 - How to Perform Clean-Boot Troubleshooting for Windows 98. I suspect either a lingering virus or some other program interfering, and this is a slow - but often fruitful - method of resolving odd issues.

    WyllyWylly,

    I'm up and running again...
I did need to remove my video driver and reinstall it, but things seem good as new!!
    Happy Easter to you also.

Thank you for all your help!
