    CHKDSK (XPP SP1)

On a brand new computer something is flaky so I tried to run chkdsk /f /r. It is an NTFS and when it reboots and tries to run the chkdsk /f /r it says it can not open the disk for direct access. Then it says it has finished checking the disk and it does not go through the 5 steps it should. How can I correct this?

    Thanks.

I notice the CHKDSK /? doesn't say you shouldn't use both /f and /r but I think that may be what the problem was. It DOES say that using /r "implies" /f. When I chkdsk my only NTFS partition, I use only the /f parameter and have never had a problem.

    Re: CHKDSK (XPP SP1)

Thanks AL but that's not it. I use those switches all the time on my machines and never ran into a problem until I purchased this machine for my local lodge. It is having a problem booting and so I ran SFC /scannow and wanted to run chkdsk /f /r before raising H--- with the builder.

    Thanks.

I made a mistake, it says it cannot open the "Volume" not the disk.

    Re: CHKDSK (XPP SP1)

In the first post you didn't describe what you meant by "flaky" but in this post you said it's having trouble booting. Perhaps whatever that trouble is might be the cause of the CHKDSK failure then, huh? When you boot the machine, exactly what does it do or say - error messages and the like. Unfortunately I don't have a machine with a lone NTFS partition, so I don't know what that kind of situation should look like when you run chkdsk. My lone NTFS partition is not a boot partition, so when I run chkdsk, it does so without rebooting.

    Re: CHKDSK (XPP SP1)

    Hi Al,

From a cold boot it tries to boot, retries then goes to the screen where you choose Safe, Normal, etc. Then sometimes on the 3rd or 4th try it may actually boot up.

There is something causing this because now, in my opinion, since I asked it to do a chkdsk /f /r and because the check disk is not allowed direct access to the Volume every boot brings up the check disk screen. I have the computer builder on his way in to try to correct the problem. Probably a driver conflict somewhere. Hope he finds.

    Thanks.

It appears that it was bad video drivers causing all the problems. They were disabled and all is functioning fine now. It was drivers that had to do with TV and video capture which I have no need of.

Does this mean you've successfully run CHKDSK also?

    Re: CHKDSK (XPP SP1)

    Hi Joe,

Yes it does. The bad video driver was causing all the problems I had been having. Once it was disabled everything functioned as it should. It was a TV video capture driver which will never be needed on the machine in question so I agreed to allow it to just be disabled rather than replacing it.
