XP not bringing up stuff (XP Home)

Has anyone come up with this? On a friend's computer when you go into Internet Explorer, Control Panel, or My Computer, nothing happens. The hourglass comes up for a while, the background changes, and then back to the desktop. Email apparently is unaffected, but several other stuff stops working. It does not appear to affect Office stuff (or at least Word, didn't try the other stuff) but is very annoying. Is there any solution short of doing a system wipe? The system Restore utility does not appear to do anything.

Could you provide a little more explanation on that item? My first guess would be a trojan/virus/spyware component interfering. Have you done the requisite virus and spyware scan?

Yeah, Adaware and NAV both up to date found nothing. When you double click on any icon, the desktop goes away briefly. This is then replaced by the background of the program you're running. In this case, it doesn't bring anything up and just returns to the desktop.

Do you mean like Word, Quicken, Paint Shop Pro or some game program ??

I'm leaning toward Mark on this. Do you have a Trojan finder on board ??? How about Hijack This ??
