    Problem with Personal.xls macro worksheet (2000 SR-1)

    Hi All,

I recently received a 'new' PC from my IT department. It is running Windows 2000 Professional with Office 2000 professional (same as my previous PC). I have for ages maintained a PERSONAL.XLS macro worksheet which I was careful to save prior to my receiving my new PC. Upon receiving my new PC I had to 'FIX' many items to the way I work; a typical process. Anyway, upon trying to use my custom menus in Excel (which call macros in my PERSONAL.XLS workbook), I keep getting an error message saying that Personal.xls is already open. I have never encountered this problem before when I've copied my PERSONAL.XLS file to other machines. I can't figure out what is causing it at the present time.

Presently I keep the PERSONAL.XLS in the following location:

C:...Application DataMicrosoftExcelXLSTARTPERSONAL.XLS <--- (loads on excel startup and is hidden)

I also have a workbook called:

    C:...Application DataMicrosoftExcelXLUSRGAL.XLS

with custom chart styles, etc. and my custom menus were stored in the following file:

c:winntmyuserid8.xls ( I realize there are probably better ways of doing this, but I've not learned them yet)

Any hints as to what I can do to fix this issue?

    Drew

Re: Problem with Personal.xls macro worksheet (2000 SR-1)

It sounds like you also copied your myuserid8.xlb (not .xls) file from your old PC to get your tool bars and buttons to the new machine. It also sounds like your Personal.xls file was stored in a different directory on the old machine. Therefore, the custom buttons on your toolbars are pointing to the macros in Personal.xls in the directory on the old machine. Therefore, Excel is trying to open Personal.xls from that old directory. What you will need to do is go to each of those buttons and reconnect them to the macros in the Personal.xls in its new directory.

DOH!!!!!! (as I smack my forehead) <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15> You are brilliant!! Thanks!! That was the issue. I checked the macro that was assigned to one menu item and it refered to a my PERSONAL.XLS file macro when it was stored on another partition. I did as you suggested and all of them work again.

    THANKS AGAIN for your help!!
