Messages received as attachments (Outlook 2000)

All the messages I receive from one sender arrive as txt attachments. No-one seems to know why. Hers are the only messages I receive that behave this way and only one of her other recipients has the same issue. Is this an Outlook setting on my side? Her ISP (USA.net) don't seem to know what's doing.

    TIA

Decoding errors, where the receiving mail client has trouble sorting out the body from the attachments, should be rare; they are rare. Years ago I remember that some scanning software (virus scanning or other security software) had a bad habit of causing bodies to become attachments, but recently, I haven't heard anything like that.

What software is your correspondent using to send the message? Is she on Windows or Mac or *nix? Any security software touching the mail on the way out?

She is using XP Home and does her mail via USANet apparently as web mail.

That doesn't leave many variables. Maybe your ISP has problems with mail from USANet on the server side. Hopefully someone else has some suggestions.

The interesting thing is a colleague and I have the same problem, but we have quite different ISPs.

This may be caused by sending mail in RTF and receiving it in plain text

Re: Messages received as attachments (Outlook 2000)

Did a few tests with my friend yesterday and it turns out that if she removes her signature line, the problem goes away. What it is in her signature, which is simply name, address, phone numbers etc., separated by colons, commas and so on, that causes the problem is a mystery.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We now have a work-around. :-)

If you do want to dig a bit further, the Signature should be stored under something like Cocuments and Settings[username]Application DataMicrosoftSignatures. There will be three of them for each signature: one for each of the Outlook mail formats (TXT, RTF, HTM). HTH
