PC Hangs

My neighbour is running Win98 on an IBM Aptiva. He recently installed NAV 2004. When he boots up in normal mode, all the icons on the desktop come up, but nothing happens. The keyboard is inactive, the mouse can be moved around on the monitor, but you cannot click on anything. When you click on the START button, it depresses, but does not yield a menu. Cannot get to the WWW, etc...you get the picture. Any insight that anyone can provide as to how to resolve this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Unistall Norton !!! Sounds like he doesn't have the system resources to run the newer version, or one of the live updates has trashed his system. Perhaps he can reinstall his old version of NAV and Norton will still support it (but likely only for another year or so).

Newer software and older hardware sometimes don't work and play well together. Unfortunately, the software folks are constantly insisting that you upgrade your hardware to run their software. Seldom is there a compromise.

Hi Doc. I think you have it right on!! The problem is that how do you UNinstall NAV when you cannot get anything to happen in "normal mode" and "SAFE" mode will not let you uninstall anything. I am thinking that there must be a way to uninstall from a DOS prompt??? Any insight that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ron:
How about:
1. Boot in Safe Mode
2. Go to Start/Run & type "msconfig" (no quotes)
3. Go to Startup stab & uncheck all the Norton entries.
4. Reboot normally.
5. Uninstall Norton.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Phil. With a little help from a friend we have it running again. It appears that part of the problem was not enough ram, so Windows sort of got hung up paging stuff in and out of memory. Added more ram and presto, seems to be working.

Ron,

You didn't mention if your friend was EVER able to make the machine run once he installed the new version of Norton. I'd bet that it was DOA when he rebooted after installing it. You really have to be careful to read the minimum system requirements for any software upgrade you install on your system if it's more than a couple years old.

Glad to hear it all worked out. Added more RAM and "presto", huh ??
