Selection does not turn off (Excel 2000)

I have a situation on one computer where a mouse click automaticallt selects a range in Excel. Example, I click in A1 and then click in A10 - the range A1 to A10 is selected! The feature cannot be turned off, it is not possible to get to menus or anything else, it requires re-booting to exit Excel. We have downloaded and installed all service releases to no avail. The mouse works fine in other Office programs.

Any ideas or help anyone? It would be very much appreciated.

No wheel - sorry. Thanks for your suggestion though.
    Anybody else have any ideas?

Re: Selection does not turn off (Excel 2000)

I had this problem a couple of years ago. It seemed that the only "solution" was to restart the computer. Not acceptable solution, but it usually avoided the problem for a few months. The mouse (not a wheel mouse) was the problem, and it never affected other Office programs. When I changed to a wheel mouse, I have never had the problem.

Sometimes reverting to an older mousedriver solves this issue.

I have had this problem intermittently, though not recently, and I suspect the mouse or mouse driver to be the cause. I don't have a permanent fix, but what I usually find is that Excel has somehow got into Selection Extend mode; if that is the case "EXT" will show in the third box on the right of the status bar and you can clear it by pressing F8.
