    bananas

    1#
A man walks into a bar, orders a drink, and starts chatting with the bartender.
After a while, he learns that the bartender has three children. "How old are your children?" he asks.
"Well," replies the bartender, "The product of their ages is 72."
The man thinks for a moment and then says, "That's not enough information."
"All right," continues the bartender. "If you go outside and look at the building number posted over the door to the bar, you'll see the sum of the ages."
The man steps outside, and after a few moments he reenters and declares, "Still not enough!"
The bartender smiles and says, "My youngest just loves bananas."

    How old are the children?

<img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23> . I know two other ways of defining the operation for the first symbol and one other way for the second.

1# <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold"><font color=yellow>72 can be the product of three numbers in many ways, but there are only two combinations with the same sum: 3, 3, 8 and 2, 6, 6. For the purpose of this puzzle we'll assume that "youngest" means youngest in (whole) years, so with ages 3, 3, 8 the bartender cannot speak of "my youngest". The ages must be 2, 6, 6.</font color=yellow></span hi>

    Assuming exact ages...

    <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold"><font color=yellow>6, 6 and 2</font color=yellow></span hi>
    The other combination with the same sum is <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold"><font color=yellow>3, 8, 3</font color=yellow></span hi> but this doesn't <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold"><font color=yellow> have a youngest </font color=yellow></span hi>

Edited to add Missed Hans answer above, must have been sleeping, or at work and not concentrating on the puzzle properly!

    Re: bananas

Brothers and sisters does indeed refer only to the real siblings, which, if you want a clue, number <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold"><font color=yellow>3</font color=yellow></span hi>.

    Re: bananas

Strictly, true Steve. I should have just used the word "siblings". Apologies for any confusion caused.
